| POMPEII didn't have a lot of luck at the beginning of the first millenium. In 62AD it suffered an earthquake which largely destroyed the area and as rebuilding continued slowly it suffered cataclysmic destruction as nearby volcano Vesuvius massively erupted in 79AD, burying the town and population in volcanic ash. It was not until 1748 that excavations to restore Pom-peii began in earnest and they still continue today. These photos which I took on a visit to Pompeii, give but a glimpse of this fascinating place. Mount Vesuvius dominates in the background. On the left you can see a groove made in the road by the wheels of Pompeiian carts. Unphased by antiquity, a dog takes time out for a snooze in the sunshine - bottom left. |
